ICSE CHEMISTRY CLASS 10 PRACTICAL CHEMISTRY

Test for Anion present in the given salt:

Anion

Test

Observation

Chloride ion – Cl1-
The salt is heated with Conc. Sulphuric acid

(OR)
When silver nitrate solution is added
A pungent odour gas which gives  dense white fumes  with glass rod dipped inn Ammonia solution.

A white  ppt. is formed which is soluble in excess Ammonium hydroxide
Nitrate ion – NO31-
The salt is heated in a glass test tube
(OR)
To the salt solution FeSO4 is added and Conc. Sulphuric acid is added drop wise.
Reddish brown vapours

Brown ring
Carbonate ion – CO32-
Dil. acid is added
Effervescence -  turns lime water milky – no effect on acidified KMnO4 and K2Cr2O7.
Sulphite ion – SO32-
Dil. acid is added

(OR)
Barium chloride solution is added
Colourless gas – turns lime water milky – decolourizes KMnO4 and turns K2Cr2O7 to clear green solution.

A white ppt. which is soluble in dilute HCl or HNO3.
Sulphate  ion – SO42-
Barium chlorie solution is added.
A white ppt. which is insoluble in dilute HCl or HNO3.
