Electronic configuration
Electronic configuration is the distribution of electrons in the shell of an atom of the element.
The shells in atom
are represented by the letters K, L, M, N, ………
The number of maximum electrons that can be accommodated in
a given shell is determined by the formula 2n2.
‘n’ is the orbit number
Orbit (shell) number
Maximum no. of electrons – 2n2
K shell – n=1
2x 12 =2
L shell – n=2
2x 22 =8
M shell – n=3
2x 32 =18
N shell – n=4
2x 42 =32
Note : Valence shell will not have more than 8 electrons.
