Hydrogen exhibits dual nature.
Hydrogen is a non-metallic element but it is placed in Group 1 along with alkali metals and Group 17 along with Halogens as well in The Periodic Table. It is due to the similarities in its properties with those elements.
Similarities of Hydrogen with Alkali metals - Group 1 elements
- One valence electron
- Lose one electron and shows valency (oxidation state) 1+
- Electropositive in nature
- Combine with non-metals like Oxygen, Sulphur, Chlorine etc. to form compounds
- Act as a reducing agent
Similarities of Hydrogen with Halogens - Group 17 elements
- Have one electron less than their nearest noble gas
- Gain one electron for stable electronic configuration
- Shows a valency (oxidation state) 1-
- Electronegative in nature
- Combine with metals to form Electrovalent compounds
- They form diatomic molecules
