a) Name the following.
i) The electrolyte which contains only ions and conducts large amounts of electric current.
ANS: Strong electrolyte
ii) The electrode which takes part in electrolysis.
Ans: Active Electrode
iii) The impurities collected under anode during electro-refining of an impure metal.
Ans: Anode mud
iv) The greyish metal deposited on cathode during the electrolysis of a fused salt.
Ans: Lead
v) The electrolyte used in electroplating an article with Silver.
Ans: Sodium Argento Cyanide

b) State your observation in each of the following cases.
i) At cathode in the electrolysis of Copper sulphate using copper electrodes.
Ans: Pinkish brown deposit
ii) In the electrolyte during the electrolysis of Copper sulphate using inert (Platinum) electrodes.
Ans: Blue colour of the solution fades
iii)At anode during the electrolysis of acidified water.
Ans: A colourless gas which rekindles a glowing splint
iv) At anode during electrolysis of fused Lead bromide.
Ans: Reddish brown fumes
v) At cathode during the electrolysis of a salt in its fused state.
Ans: Greyish metal deposit.

c) Give Reason
i) Alternate current is not passed through the electrolyte during electroplating.
Ans: alternate current causes discharge and ionization to alternate at the electrodes which does not give a smooth deposition on metal.
ii) Blue colour of the electrolyte does not fade during the electrolysis of Copper sulphate when Copper electrodes are used.
Ans: The Copper ions discharged at cathode will be replaced by anode.

d) Write balanced electrode equation at:
i)  anode in the electrolysis of fused Lead bromide
Ans: 2Br1- + 2e- -- > Br2

ii) cathode in the electrolysis of Copper sulphate.

Ans :Cu2+ + 2e- -- > Cu

iii) anode in the electrolysis of Copper  sulphate using Copper electrodes.
Ans : Cu – 2e- -- > Cu2-

iv) Cathode in the electroplating an article with Nickel.

Ans: Ni2+ + 2e- -- > Ni

e) A water soluble _________(weak/ strong) electrolyte undergoes __________(complete/ partial) dissociation in its aqueous solution and conducts large amount of electric current through it. It contains ___________ (ions only/ molecules only/ ions  and molecules)
