  • GIVE REASONS

  1. 1.     HCl gas is not collected over water.
    2.     In the laboratory preparation of HCl, temperature is maintained below 2000C.
    3.     HCl gas exposed to Ammonia gives white dense fumes.
    4.     Conc. HNO3 is not used instead of Conc. Sulphuric acid in the preparation of HCl gas.
    5.     Hydrochloric acid is not prepared by dissolving HCl gas directly in water.
    6.     HCl gas cannot be dried using quick lime.
    7.     HCl in water conducts electricity but in Toluene does not.

a)      State your observations when dil. HCl is added to:
1.      A metal Carbonte : 
ANS: Brisk effervescence of a colourless gas. The gas turns lime water milky but has no effect on acidified Potassium permanganate or Potassium dichromate.
2.       A metal sulphite
ANS: A suffocating gas clolourless gas is produced. This gas turns lime water milky. This gas turns acidified Potassium dichromate to clear green solution and decolourizes acidified Potassium permanganate
3.       A metal sulphide:
ANS: A colourless gas with rotten egg smell is evolved. This gas turns moist Lead acetate paper to silvery black.
4.       Silver nitrate solution:
ANS: A white precipitate is formed. This precipitate is soluble in excess Ammonium hydroxide.
5.       Lead nitrate solution:
ANS: A white precipitate is formed. This precipitate disappears on heating.

b)      State your observations when Conc. HCl is added to :
1.       MnO:Ans: A gas with greenish yellow colour is evolved.
2.       KMnO:Ans: A gas with greenish yellow colour is evolved

c)       State your observation when Hydrogen chloride gas is mixed with Ammonia gas.
ANS: It gives dense white fumes when HCl gas is mixed with Ammonia gas.

d)      In the fountain experiment using HCl gas.
ANS: The litmus solutions rises in the jet tube and when it ejects out of the jet tube, it turns to litmus solution.

e) State your observation when the glass rod is exposed to the gas released when Conc. Sulphuric acid is heated with NaCl.
ANS: A colourless gas with pungent odour is released. When a glass rod dipped in Ammonium hydroxide is exposed to that gas it produces dense white fumes. 

       State your observations when:
1.      Excess Ammonium hydroxide is added to the precipitate obtained by adding dil. HCl to AgNO3 solution.
2.      When dil. HCl is added to Na2S.
3.      Conc. HCl is heated with MnO2.
4.      Dil. HCl is added to Magnesium ribbon.
5.      Dil. HCl is added to AgNO3 solution.
6.      Sodium chloride is heated with Conc. Sulphuric acid.
7.      In the fountain experiment using HCl gas.
8.      A glass rod dipped in NH4OH is brought near the open end of a gas jar containing HCl gas.
9.      A few drops of dil. HCl is added to AgNO3 solution followed by addition of NH4OH.

10.  Dil. HCl added to Sodium carbonate crystals.
